M – is for Mucha
Alphonse Mucha born in 1860 in the now Czech Republic, was an illustrator and graphic artist, living in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, best known for his distinctly stylized and decorative theatrical posters, particularly those of Sarah Bernhardt. Many of his lithographs featured swirling natural forms which he is famed for.I was very lucky to see an exhibition of his work in Liverpool at the Walker Gallery a couple of years ago on my birthday. I really had no idea of the scale of the lithographs he designed. It was great to see them for real as he is one of my main influences. You can see this in one of my embroidery designs that I have used many times and is one of my favourites.
